El Teide from Chío
The TF-38 from Chío is the shortest and most even of the Teide ascents: 25 km at a steady 5.5% from 750 m up to the Mirador de Boca Tauce at 2,050 m, where it meets the national park plateau. Long straights and wide bends make it a pacing exercise rather than a gradient fight — over an hour of uninterrupted threshold riding.
Summit elevation: 2050 m

El Teide from Chío and the Tour
Teide is the preferred altitude training hub for WorldTour pros (Visma-Lease a Bike, UAE Team Emirates, Ineos Grenadiers). Remco Evenepoel, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar spend weeks at the Parador hotel inside the caldera preparing for Grand Tours, and the Chío side is the standard test piece.
Remco Evenepoel took the Strava KOM on the 24.55 km Chío to Teide segment in 56:25 in March 2023 during an altitude camp, beating the 58:21 set by Jonas Hjorth in 2020. Teide has never hosted a Grand Tour stage: every benchmark here is a training-camp time.
56:25 on the 24.55 km Chío segment at 5.5% average, set on a training camp rather than in a race.
Riding it yourself
When to go
Rideable year-round thanks to Tenerife's subtropical climate. Winter and early spring (November to April) are the most popular months for European cyclists, and the plateau can be 15°C colder than the coast.
Base & logistics
Base yourself in Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, or Chío itself. Fill up before the climb: there is nothing between Chío and Boca Tauce, and no services inside the volcanic national park.
FAQ
How long is the El Teide from Chío climb?
From Chío on the TF-38, the climb is about 25 km with roughly 1363 m of elevation gain at 5.5% average gradient (based on the simplified profile used by this simulator; published figures vary slightly by source).
How long does it take to cycle up El Teide from Chío?
It depends almost entirely on your power-to-weight ratio. Use the simulator on this page: enter your FTP and weight, and a physics model (air resistance, rolling resistance, gravity) estimates your time on the gradient profile.
How accurate is the time simulation?
The simulator uses a simplified segment profile and standard road bike assumptions (CdA 0.32, Crr 0.004, 8 kg bike). It does not model wind, drafting, altitude, surface or pacing errors, so treat the result as a realistic estimate, not a guarantee.
How should I train for El Teide from Chío?
Sustained climbs reward steady threshold and sweet spot work plus a power-to-weight improvement over weeks, not days. TrainCraft builds structured cycling training plans and adapts them when you miss sessions, using fatigue science (CTL/ATL/TSB).
