El Teide from Chío and the Tour

Teide is the preferred altitude training hub for WorldTour pros (Visma-Lease a Bike, UAE Team Emirates, Ineos Grenadiers). Remco Evenepoel, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar spend weeks at the Parador hotel inside the caldera preparing for Grand Tours, and the Chío side is the standard test piece.

Remco Evenepoel took the Strava KOM on the 24.55 km Chío to Teide segment in 56:25 in March 2023 during an altitude camp, beating the 58:21 set by Jonas Hjorth in 2020. Teide has never hosted a Grand Tour stage: every benchmark here is a training-camp time.
