Monte Zoncolan and the Tour

Introduced to the Giro d'Italia in 2003 (won by Gilberto Simoni), the Zoncolan earned nickname "The Kaiser". It quickly became the ultimate test for pure climbers, featuring tunnels carved through rock near the top.

Gilberto Simoni set the contemporary race record of 39:05 on Stage 17 of the 2007 Giro d'Italia. In 2018, Chris Froome won Stage 14 with a long-range attack up the Zoncolan.
